2020 First One

Got out to cut some mangroves the other day. As evening set in, tide had come down and I got the chance to walk one of may favorite flats for an hour or so. Spotted one tailing bone in very shallow water. I blew that fish. Saw a second tailing bone in close proximity and I blew that fish. At this point I decided that my fly was way to heavy for these shallow flats. I spotted another fish and had the discipline to change to a much lighter fly.

Once I was rigged up, made a short stalk to the where the fish was feeding inside of the mangroves. Made 2 casts and hooked up. Fish ran right into and through the mangroves, then out to sea. Thought the fish was a gonner, but quickly made my way to the mangroves and passed my pole through several roots and out the other side. Amazingly the fish was still attached and I was able to land my first fish of 2020.

I really enjoy helping and watching my clients catch fish. That said its nice to get a chance to get an opportunity to get one myself. Not a bad Hawaiian bone for the first one of the year.
